In 2019, the School of Art (KASK) & Royal Conservatory and the city of Ghent will be hosting the 51st International Symposium of the International Horn Society (IHS). The Mengal Ensemble, named after the founder of the Ghent Conservatory, himself an influential horn player, will be presenting a celebratory serenade to Ghent's famous horn tradition. During the belle époque, quartets by Berleur en Hanssens were favoured conservatory exam repertoire. Joseph Ryelandt and Brussels-based Paul Gilson also made their mark. The horn is still prevalent and up-to-date today, so the ensemble is also presenting the almost film-like work of Nicolas Avinée, as well as Call to Horns by Patrick Housen (alumnus in composition). Finally, the young Tristan De Pauw, still a student at the Conservatory, launches his creation for large horn ensemble into the world.
